Global Carrier Billing Summit is the flagship industry event held annually over two days. This year, DOCOMO Digital were a Diamond sponsor at this event. And we worked closely with event organizers to curate a compelling agenda and engage with the participating carriers and merchants to discuss how the industry could come together to make carrier billing manifest its potential as a viable alternative payment method.

Jonathan Kriegel on convergence 2.0
In his keynote, Jonathan Kriegel, DOCOMO Digital’s CEO, talked about direct carrier billing as a growth catalyst for mobile digital services. Jonathan takes a deep dive into how progressive carriers embrace convergence beyond connectivity and how their revenue has grown year on year, citing numbers for global telcos. He also focuses on the changes brought about by the pandemic and 5G rollouts, which have brought a shift towards DCB and spikes in transaction volumes, most notably in OTT and gaming.
Jonathan discusses ways to capitalize on this growth trend finding new monetization opportunities using existing customer data, investing in OTT partnerships, and introducing service bundles. He then goes on to discuss the impact of adopting an ecosystem approach with carrier billing, digital wallets and driving customer loyalty based on the case study of DOCOMO Digital’s parent company, NTT DOCOMO.
All followed by a recap of how we can create more value in DCB, including working with regulators, educating merchants, and going beyond mobile.
“It’s worth reminding ourselves that unless the DCB experience is superior to that of conventional credit cards and other payment methods, any potential upside coming as a result of the leading app stores relaxing their payment rules for content providers and developers may not actually materialize. Consumers prefer the app store payment experience for its ease and simplicity. Content providers and app developers will need to emulate that simplicity and make it native to their checkout processes. DCB offers a promising method to do just that.”
Jonathan Bennett on expanding the digital opportunity
In a panel discussion dedicated to exploring new avenues for digital services, Jonathan Bennett, DOCOMO Digital’s Chief Commercial Officer, discussed the changing direction of the payment experience and how carrier billing has to embrace that change. The panellists talked about how changes to app store billing policies will present operators with an opportunity to renegotiate terms with their strategic partners and why the telecom industry must be ready to ensure it supports merchants however they want their consumers to conduct in-app purchases.
Filippo Giachi on the diversification in telco-OTT bundling
In another panel discussion on the second day of the event, Filippo Giachi, DOCOMO Digital’s SVP Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, focused on the perspectives for DCB and bundling. The panel included representatives of a digital merchant, telco, and DCB provider, creating a balanced discussion across the value chain, focusing on verticals like cloud gaming and live sports and how telco-merchant partnerships can be mutually beneficial in these spaces.
